Unirea, reunirea si deriva continentelor terestre este un proces interesant care s-a derulat de mai multe ori in istoria de 4,5 miliarde ani a planetei Terra. Cel mai recent supercontinent a fost Pangeea, care a inceput sa se fragmenteze, si implicit sa se divida in urma cu 200 de milioane ani in urma. Cateva astfel de supercontinente care au precedat formarea Pangeei au fost grupate de cercetatori intr-un supercontinent initial care a existat acum 1 miliard de ani, denumit Rodinia.
